No. 5439 c.1860s Maltese Lace Lappet:
Approximately 150cm long in cream Spanish silk from Barcelona. Maltese lace is a continuous bobbin lace which is made in individual sections and then rather loosley pieced together to form a large piece. Traditional Maltese lace patterns carry the Maltese cross design seen here in the central motifs at each end. The actual piece's use as part of a mid 19thC head covering, the fine thread used to join the pieces and the compact lace design all indicate it was made around 1860. Some very minor damage in the form of a couple of loose threads and a small light stain otherwise excellent. Price: $245.00
