No. 5439 c.1860s Maltese Lace Lappet:
Approximately 150cm long in cream Spanish silk from Barcelona. Maltese lace is a continuous bobbin lace which is made in individual sections and then rather loosley pieced together to form a large piece. Traditional Maltese lace patterns carry the Maltese cross design seen here in the central motifs at each end. The actual piece's use as part of a mid 19thC head covering, the fine thread used to join the pieces and the compact lace design all indicate it was made around 1860. Some very minor damage in the form of a couple of loose threads and a small light stain otherwise excellent. Price: $245.00

No. 4992 c.1850s/70s Silk Embroidered Piano Shawl: Export Quality Cantonese hand embroidered black silk shawl - the silk perle thread colours are still vibrant. This shawl is larger than normal at 1.6m square plus a 60cm deep knotted fringe. The 75 year old lady I bought it from remembers it as a young child on her grandmother's grand piano in Bruges and had been told it was very old then. The fringe is a little tangled (but only a little), there are a couple of very small pinholes and some loose embroidery threads - all repairable if desired. It has an allover embroidery design (not like the later 20s shawls which mainly had corners) with two large opposite feature corners - one of which you can see in the photo. SOLD
