They were a piece of inexpensive jewellery with a secondary purpose - that of containing  simple sewing materials for emergency repairs. This brooch is made of brass with a central Goldstone (Aventurine family) decorative "jewel".  This goldstone is one of the sparkliest ones I have seen - very pretty. The more unusual oblong stone (I have one of the more common round stones pictured below) is mounted on a cylindrical bar, with smooth knobs at each end and decorated with foliate scrolls.  The left hand knob unscrews to reveal a hollow tube, which has the original black and white thread and needle for the emergency repair. It is secured by a strong pin with C clasp. On the reverse side, the brooch is identified with the words "DRGM" and "268036' - this means the design is protected by German law - like a patent.
