No. 5422 c. 1910 Nanny Brooch: Nanny brooches are a late Victorian, early Edwardian novelty. They were a piece of inexpensive jewellery with a secondary purpose - that of containing  simple sewing materials for emergency repairs. This brooch is made of brass with a central Goldstone (Aventurine family) decorative "jewel". This is mounted on a cylindrical bar, with smooth knobs at each end and decorated with foliate scrolls.  The left hand knob unscrews to reveal a hollow tube, which was originally wound round with black and white thread and contained a needle and pin for the emergency repair - the thread and needle/pin in this case have been used. It is secured by a strong pin with C clasp. On the reverse side, the brooch is identified with the words "DRGM" and an indistinct number - this means the design is protected by German law - like a patent. This brooch is in very good used condition with two very small fleabites (can be felt but not easily seen) to the edge of the central stone and a bend in the pin from use - it is 4.7cm in length. Price: $385.00.
